On 4 and 5 May 2012, the world’s most significant conference on energy efficient construction will bring over 1000 experts from 45 countries to Hanover, Germany 2012 to distil concrete solutions for an EU wide energy revolution based on energy efficiency from the vast pool of Passive House experience. Some 40,000 Passive House buildings totalling circa 20 million square metres in area currently offer their users the highest levels of comfort while saving them roughly 240 million euros (approx 320 million dollars) annually in energy costs; these numbers are rising sharply.

Hanover / Darmstadt, Germany; 4 May 2012 – Cutting national budgets while encouraging growth and reducing unemployment – this is currently the top priority for the EU and governments around the world. How to harmonise these seemingly opposing goals and in so doing produce positive ripple effects will be highlight at the 16th International Passive House Conference in Hanover, Germany. If the new EU Energy Efficiency Directive with the necessary accompanying measures is quickly implemented, it could lead to full employment in many sectors Europe-wide by 2030, which in turn will boost economies and reduce debt.

Hannover / Darmstadt, 2 May 2012 - Following on from the success of last year's first Passive House Basics course in the framework of the International Passive House Conference in Innsbruck, the same team of Passive House experts presented the Passive House Basics Course 2012 at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Hannover on 2 May, just two days before the start of the 16 th International Passive House Conference.

Rainer Pfluger from the University of Innsbruck brought along a ventilation demonstration model to give a practical insight on the required components. The success story of innovative Passive House window frame development was visualised by Franz Freundorfer. Scientific researcher Witta Ebel from the Passive House Institute showed the Passive House quality offensive with a close look at economics from the first projects up to today.

Darmstadt/Hanover, 02/February 2012 - Energy efficient construction and renovation is possi- ble anywhere and for every type of building. Energy efficient, Passive House buildings ranging from residential buildings to indoor tennis courts, hotels and hospitals can be constructed not only in Germany but also in Sweden, Indonesia, Croatia or Korea. The whole range of solu- tions made possible by the Passive House Standard is presented in the newly released Con- ference Programme of the 16 th Passive House Conference, taking place on 4 and 5 May 2012 in Hanover, with a framework programme running from 2 to 6 May. The energy these build- ings need is reduced not only by a few percentage points, but by a factor of four and often even more. Indeed, the remaining demand is so small that it can usually be met sustainably by the use of regionally available renewable energy sources.

With days of reading already behind them, the 19 members of the Scientific Conference Advisory Board met at the Passive House Institute on 7 December in order to decide the fate of hundreds of submissions. After 9 hours of discussion, one could see from their faces that they were satisfied with the outcome. Was it exhausting? "The day had an exciting atmosphere in anticipation of the Conference", said Harald Halfpaap, Director of proKlima - Der enercity-Fonds.

234 submissions - 5% more than the previous year - were discussed and assessed during the meeting. "We found it difficult to decide because of the high quality of abstracts", admits Ludwig Rongen, who is an architect and Professor of Structural Theory. He also reveals the main points that matter: "Essential evaluation criteria include implementability and thorough documentation. We also want to choose as many submissions as possible that feature Passive House fulfilling high design demands."

This year also, architects, engineers, scientists, and construction experts have responded to the call for papers. A total of 234 abstracts from 35 countries have been submitted, half of which are in English, thus reflecting the internationality of the specialist conference.

Most of the contributions came from Germany (91) and Austria (23), followed by the United Kingdom (19), and the USA (15). Some abstracts also arrived from Ireland, Denmark, Korea, Switzerland, Italy and from "pioneering regions". "These actors are trying to implement things in their regions which for us are self-evident. They are one of the initial pioneers and should be given the chance to take part in the International Conference", Mark Zimmermann (of Empa, Switzerland) praises the initiative taken by authors in new Passive House regions who wish to participate with a contribution in the Conference Programme.

Besides traditional themes such as "New research and developments", "Refurbishments using Passive House Components" and "Non-residential buildings in the Passive House Standard", the subject of the energy standard aimed for by the EU with a focus on "Passive Houses and Nearly Zero Energy Buildings " will also be addressed.

The Conference Programme will be published in January 2012.
